Junior ROTC Instructor

Non Interim Position

Dates:  07/26/2024 - 05/23/2025

Purpose Statement

The job of JROTC Instructor is to manage and support the JROTC program.  Although they spend much of their time in the classroom, enrollment, fundraising, community relations, administrative, student counseling, leadership mentoring and extensive extra and co-curricular activities are the fundamental part of the job.

 

Essential Functions

  • Community relations, liaison with other Army and civilian agencies in the aerospace field
  • Unit supply, funds administration, and other administrative functions 
  • Career, performance, behavioral, leadership, character and academic counseling and mentoring
  • Enrollment activities
  • Extensive extracurricular and co-curricular programs, including, but not limited to:
    • Military ball
    • Field Training Exercise (FTX)
    • Summer Leaderships School (SLS)
    • Inter-JROTC sports competition
    • Cadet newspaper
    • Drill team, and color guard practices and competitions
    • Parades, flag raising, retreat ceremonies
    • Presentation of awards
    • Fundraising activities for the unit or charitable institutions
  • Wear of the appropriate Army uniform is mandatory while performing duties. 
  • The job of JROTC Instructor is not as structured as most Army vocations. Although the Army provides some guidance for managing the program, self-direction, initiative, and self-reliance are essential traits of the position. Only those who desire this flexibility in their work should apply.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying district, state and federal policies and regulations; operating standard office equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.   Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment.  Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with detailed information.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

 

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands; some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Basic Requirements

  • Retired US Army Senior Non-Commissioned Officer and Certified as a JROTC Instructor by US Army Cadet Command 
  • Possess a current Child Care National Agency Check and Inquiry Certification
  • Associate’s degree or complete within five years of hire date
  • Arizona State JROTC Teaching Certificate and Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Obtain and maintain the National Federation of State High School Associations/Arizona Interscholastic Athletic Association Coaching Certification
