Braille Technician IV

Location: Shadow Mountain High School

9 months, 6.5 hours/day

Grade 17, $16.45/hour

Purpose Statement

The job of Braille Technician Specialist IV is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for accurately translating, reading, and writing in Literary Braille and science and math using Nemeth Code; transcribing educational materials into alternative formats (Braille, large print, etc.) for the blind and/or visually impaired students; providing Braille graphics; and responding to questions from teachers, students, parents, and/or staff regarding methodologies and available resources.

This job reports to Vision Resource Teacher

Essential Functions

Adapts and/or creates classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher (e.g. creating new materials, enlarging materials, etc.) for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.

Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.

Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.

Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

Communicates with teachers and/or parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

Distributes materials to the Teacher for the Visually Impaired (e.g. Braille, large print items, etc.) for the purpose of providing requested instructional materials.

Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.

Maintains classroom equipment, materials, and manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; and providing written reference and/or meeting mandated requirements.

Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Performs general clerical functions (e.g. answering phones, preparing requisitions, providing technical support, filing, scanning, copying, ordering supplies, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the instructional program.

Prepares Braille materials using computer software or Braillewriter for the purpose of providing educational materials to blind and/or visually impaired students.

Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.

Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; operating equipment used in Braille transcription; Abacus skills; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; age appropriate activities; Literary Braille transcribing; Braille graphics; Nemeth Code translation for math and science.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with detailed information and/or data; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions; maintaining a good rapport with students, staff and community.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience:  Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education:     High school diploma or equivalent.
