Special Education Translator
Location: Special Education-DAC
10 months, 8 hours/day
Grade 21, $19.08/hour

Purpose Statement
The job of Special Education Translator is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for exact oral interpretations ( Spanish and English) during Special Education meetings and activities; and preparing complex Spanish/English translations pertaining to Special Education issues.
This job reports to Director of Special Education
Essential Functions
Arranges interpreters for a variety of school functions (e.g. meetings, special events, etc.) for the purpose of directing services in an efficient and timely manner.
Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic documents and records for the purpose of providing up to date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
Prepares written translations pertaining to Special Education issues for the purpose of providing communication between school and parents.
Provides consecutive oral English/Spanish interpretations at Special Educations meetings (e.g. MET, RED, IEP, etc.) for the purpose of providing communication between individuals in Spanish and/or English.
Researches a wide variety of subjects for the purpose of rendering the most appropriate cultural and linguistic translations.
Responds to a variety of inquiries (e.g. staff, parents, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
Schedules Spanish interpretation with Special Education District staff for the purpose of directing services in an efficient and timely manner.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Special Education language, procedures, documents, and terminology; protocol in confidential translation/interpretation; mastery of grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax and idiomatic usage of verbal and written English and Spanish; the use of appropriate cultural communications.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with detailed information; adjusting to different levels of language usage; communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others; meeting deadlines and schedules; maintaining confidentiality; prioritizing.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting,
20% walking, and 0% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.
